How Long Do Lash Extensions Last? Retention, Refills & Aftercare Explained

How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?
Lash extensions last 4–6 weeks. However, visible fullness begins to decrease after 2–3 weeks as natural lashes shed through their growth cycle. To maintain a consistently full look, most clients book a refill appointment every 2–3 weeks.
After 4 weeks without a refill, a full set is typically required rather than a refill, as too few original extensions remain to work from.
Why Do Lash Extensions Fall Out?
Lash extensions do not simply detach. They shed along with your natural lashes as part of the normal hair growth cycle, which has three phases:
- Anagen (growth phase): lash grows actively for 30–45 days
- Catagen (transition phase): growth stops over 2–3 weeks
- Telogen (resting/shedding phase): the natural lash falls out, taking the extension with it
Each eye has approximately 90–150 natural lashes at various stages of this cycle. Shedding 2–5 lashes per eye per day is completely normal and expected.
What Affects Lash Extension Retention?
1. Aftercare Routine
This is the single biggest factor in retention. Oil-based products, rubbing the eyes, and sleeping face-down all weaken the adhesive bond. Following the correct aftercare routine can add 1–2 full weeks to your retention.
2. Skin Type
Clients with oily skin or oily eyelids tend to experience faster breakdown of the adhesive. Informing your lash artist about your skin type allows them to select an adhesive formulated for your needs.
3. Physical Activity & Environment
Daily swimming, heavy exercise with significant sweating, and regular steam room or sauna use accelerate shedding. Extensions are still compatible with an active lifestyle — refill appointments may simply need to be slightly more frequent.
4. Application Quality
Extensions applied with proper isolation technique, medical-grade adhesive, and correct curing conditions will always outperform discount applications. Poor isolation (extensions sticking together), overloaded fans, or incorrect humidity during curing all reduce bond strength significantly.
5. Natural Lash Health
Fine or brittle natural lashes cannot support the same extension weight as healthy ones. A lash conditioning treatment before your first set is recommended if your natural lashes need strengthening.
Refill Schedule: When to Book
| Time since full set | Remaining extensions | Service needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 weeks | 40–60% remaining | Standard refill (1 hr) |
| 3–4 weeks | 20–40% remaining | Extended refill (1 hr 20 min) |
| 4+ weeks | Under 20% remaining | New full set recommended |
Booking on time costs less and takes less time. Waiting too long means paying for a full set twice as often.
